German Restaurant Feels Like Year-Round Oktoberfest

With homemade dishes, imported beers and nightly live entertainment, the cozy, inn-style restaurant invites tourists and locals to enjoy the Old World charm of Deutschland. Since 1984, the Horst Gasthaus German Restaurant and Lounge has introduced the Grand Strand to an authentic German experience.

Upon entering Horst Gasthaus, visitors are effortlessly transported to an 18th century German inn where waitresses in traditional garb serve frosty steins of lager. Accordion music from the nightly house band, Joe and January, adds to the room’s excitement and inspires singing and dancing in children and adults alike. Close tables give the dining area a communal atmosphere, and it isn’t uncommon for diners to find themselves singing and laughing with fellow patrons by the ends of their meals.

Owner and chef Tommy Doetzel makes everything on the sprawling menu from his family’s recipes. Fare includes traditional German entrees such as Rinds Roulade and Wiener Schnitzel accompanied with small sides of Red Cabbage, Sauer Kraut, and a fantastic German Potato Salad. Particularly mouth-watering is the Horst Gasthaus Platte, a sampling platter of sausages and Sauerbraten worthy of a return visit by itself.

For many patrons, no visit to a German restaurant would be complete without toasting a mug of Germany’s finest beer and shouting a hearty “Prost!”  The pub serves 13 imported beers, including Bitburger and Warsteiner, and offers a broad spectrum of German and other European wines in addition to a vast assortment of domestic beverages.

If you’ve left room for a grand finale try a slice of freshly-baked Black Forest Cake. Doetzel makes this pastry daily and it just may be one of the greatest desserts on the beach.

Too often, international restaurants become so theme-laden they can’t seem to break away from their novelty status. However, Horst Gasthaus continues to prove itself as a Myrtle Beach favorite with outstanding food and consistent quality that keeps guests coming back year after year.

Horst Gasthaus is located off 37th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach. They open at 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays year round, and the number is (843) 272-3351.
