Battle of the Burgers: Part II

Battle of the Burgers: Part II

Battle of the Burgers: Part Two

Ask any native to the Myrtle Beach area where to find the best burgers along the beach and you’re likely to hear one of two answers: Hamburger Joe’s of North Myrtle Beach or River City Café. In our “Battle of the Burgers” series, we’ll review and discuss the perks of each of these legendary locations but we encourage readers to experience both sides of the coin before making a final decision.

Since 1989, Hamburger Joe’s has been quietly nestled under sprawling oak trees in the more southern end of North Myrtle Beach, away from the hustle and bustle of Highway 17. Inside, the restaurant is just as easygoing and relaxed, offering tasty burgers and frosty beers with a smile.

After serving the Grand Strand for 18 years, the restaurant has not only moved to a slightly larger location, but has branched out and planted a new restaurant in Wilmington, NC. But it is here at the Myrtle Beach Joe’s that the cool energy of the original spot lives on. The walls of the tin-roofed lodge are covered with one-dollar bills, signed and decorated from thousands of guests over the years who have made themselves at home. Owner Joe Brooks contributes to the comfortable setting of the wooden house by displaying his personal golf and culinary trophy collection on the mantle of an enormous stone fireplace.

The menu is a stripped-down list of simple classics that include Buffalo Wings, Hickory Smoked Barbecue, and, of course, Joe’s Hamburgers. However, what the repertoire lacks in variety it certainly makes up for in flavor and quality. All the personal additions to a customized burger are made of the freshest vegetables and cuts of meat and even include condiments to make your burger “Carolina Style”, with chili, bacon and Cole Slaw.

Hamburger Joe’s also features a full bar with daily drink specials and exclusive cocktails, including Firefly, the local’s favorite infused vodka, which tastes like the best in Southern sweet tea.

Hamburger Joe’s is located just off Highway 17 on 48th Avenue N in North Myrtle Beach. They are open from 11 a.m–10 p.m. daily. For more information call (843) 272-6834 or visit the website at www.HamburgerJoes.com.
