Sushi on the Strand
Most visitors to Myrtle Beach spend an evening enjoying our incomparable fresh seafood, but many have yet to realize that we’re no longer the same deep-fried-fish-house city we’ve always been. These days, visitors and tourists alike are able to enjoy a wide variety of seafood through the art of Japanese sushi like those masterfully created at Sugami Japanese Restaurant, SOHO, and the new Kono Asian Grill. Known to locals as the best sushi restaurants in town, these three restaurants offer a specialized sushi bar in addition to their standardized menu, allowing diners to choose exactly the right portion for their fresh seafood cravings.
If you think sushi is just raw fish, you’d only be partially correct. The culinary art of sushi preparation includes the cooking and crafting of many ingredients, including vegetables, rice, and a vast array of underwater creatures. While most of the sushi or sashimi selections do include small servings of fresh raw seafood, many items on the sushi bar menu feature well-cooked fish of all sorts.
Although the restaurants are all owned by the same company, the standardized menus to each of the three restaurants differ only slightly. SOHO specializes in sushi but offers both lunch and dinner menus featuring entrees with an international blend of flavors. Diners can enjoy a full range of global favorites including Baby Back Ribs, Chicken Marsala, or mouth-watering prime steaks cooked over a Hibachi-style grill. At Sugami and Kono Asian Grill, the fare is decidedly more Asian influenced, featuring a full Hibachi menu and enormous Udon Noodle plates with a wide selection of sauces, meats, and vegetables.
However, at all three locations, the sushi menu is the highlight of the restaurant, featuring fresh local seafood and world-renowned imports, like the New England Mussels at Sugami that are covered in a spicy secret sauce. In addition to over 20 plain cuts of specialty local fish, the restaurants all offer an unbelievable assortment of customized rolls created by the restaurants’ respective chefs. While American sushi standards – like the Philadelphia and Californiarolls – remain popular, the original Grand Strand and Sugami Rolls are always big hits with locals or guests of Myrtle Beach.
Combinations of any sushi or sashimi selections are arranged in platters or can be ordered a la carte, which has the potential to be dangerous as multiple orders can be taken. It isn’t uncommon to see massive platters of sushi cleared and sent back for refills more than once.
